Dr. Collenberg- Gonzalez’ talk will take place before the screening of the Portland German Film Festival’s Monthly Film “Wer, wenn nicht wir?”
“Wer wenn nicht wir” is based on a true story and deals with one of the most tumultuous times in post-war (West) German history: The RAF (Red Army Faction) and their resort to violence and terrorism as a means to resist exploitation and US-imperialism. Dr. Collenberg’s talk will contextualize the film both historically and cinematically by addressing the emergence of the Red Army Faction and its members – especially Gudrun Ensslin, the protagonist of the film – and by situating the film within the established cinematic reception of the RAF.
Carrie Collenberg-Gonzalez is an Assistant Professor of German at Portland State University and the director of the Deutsche Sommerschule am Pazifik. She has published articles on the aesthetic legacy of the Red Army Faction and on learning German through film is currently co-editing a volume entitled Affective Frames: Photographs and German Cinema that is forthcoming with Berghahn Books. Her next project is another co-edited volume that focuses on the artistic legacy of Heinrich von Kleist.
